Wall calendars / Calendars

In this section, we will take a closer look at how you can create your own calendar with the help of a table. Begin by deciding how many columns and rows you need for your calendar. For the days, you will need 7 columns and 5 rows, but you might also want a row for weekdays and one for the month. That makes 7 rows. You might also like to add a row to the left of the dates for week of the year, which makes a total of 8 columns.

I add a frame color to all cells to make it easy to see what the table looks like. You can add a frame color by right-clicking in a cell in the table, scrolling down to Cell, following the arrow to Table Cell Properties and then going to Advanced and selecting Border Color next to last. When you’ve done this, check the alternative "Update All Cells in Table".

Start filling in the details in the cells. I’ve chosen April 2010 for this example.

Now we have to adjust the size of the cells so you have room to make notes.

In this example, width and height are set at 100x100px in one cell and then changed to apply for all cells in the table. This gives us a practical, large and inviting square for the days. Decide what proportions you want for your table and what will fit on the page where you have your calendar.

The squares for the row of weekdays or weeks of the year do not need to be as big. We can change this afterwards. It is easier to do it this way since the cells for the days are many more and we can set the settings for all the days at the same time.

Now we can adjust the position of text and change the size of cells that should not be 100x100px.

We want the date in the upper left corner of the square. Right-click in one cell, scroll down to Cell and follow the arrow to Table Cell Properties. Choose Top under Vertical Alignment, and check that the change applies to all cells in the table.

Now we can change the height of the first cell in the row for the weekdays. Reset to 50px and check update all cells in the row. Repeat the process for the row immediately over where we will write that it is April 2010 (we do this last of all).

The column with the week of the year does not have to be as wide as it is so we reduce this to 40px. Remember that you have to do this for each individual cell in the column before you will see the change.

Now, let’s delete the border around the cells in the first column so that it feels like the weeks of the year are next to the calendar table itself. Trick the eye a bit. Right-click in the cell, scroll down to Cell and follow the arrow out Table Cell Properties. Go to Advanced and erase what is under Style and down under Border Color. These should now be completely blank.

It looks better if the week of the year is in the middle, height-wise. Again, you have to do this per cell. Right-click in the cell, go to Cell, follow the arrow to Table Cell Properties. Go to Vertical Alignment and then Center.

Now let’s fix the top row, like we promised. Write "April 2010" here.

Mark all cells except the first one and then right-click, scroll down to Cell and follow the arrow to Merge Table Cells at the bottom.

Write "April 2010" in the brand new cell.

Then adjust the position of the text "April 2010" and the weekdays so that they are in the middle of the cells. Select the cells and click on the Center button in the toolbar. This puts them in the middle of the cells. Right-click again, go to Table Cell Properties and choose Center under Vertical Alignment.

Now for the finishing touch - a few comments in the calendar and a nice background color under April 2010. Maybe change the text if you want larger and bolder letters and numbers.

A piece of advice is to add background color as codes for different days. You don’t have to use such bright colors as the red below, but we’ve chosen a nice color for our workouts making it very clear which days are booked for exercise.
